Are you wondering if there’s a fix for your faulty Ferroli boiler?

Having to deal with a faulty boiler can be stressful, especially if you depend on it for hot water, too! And trying to work out how to diagnose the problem and whether it’s actually serious or not can also be tricky.

That’s why I’ve put together this blog post detailing five of the most common faults and fixes for Ferroli boilers, so you can get an idea of what’s causing the problem and what the solution entails.

NOTE: Remember, DO NOT try to fix the problem yourself; always call a Gas Safe registered engineer.

About Ferroli boilers

Ferroli manufacture cheap budget boilers which are known to be quite unreliable, with cheap fittings that are prone to leaks after a bit of wear and tear. It’s common for homeowners to experience a wealth of fault codes flashing up on their boilers, and often have to try and decipher what’s wrong by checking the internet.

Unfortunately, because these boilers are prone to having multiple faults at a time, many engineers (including us) will often refuse to carry out repairs. Ferroli also don’t have their own dedicated engineers, and instead use local contractors who may not have a high expertise level of dealing with this brand.

Ferroli Boiler D1 Fault Code

Fault 1: The boiler is leaking from below

If water is leaking from your boiler from below, it could be a problem due to this brand’s cheaply manufactured shut valves, as these boilers are prone to this particular fault.

The Fix: Unfortunately, the only solution is to have the valves replaced by your chosen engineer. However, they are only sold as a pack which costs over£120 at trade price, so it could be an expensive fix!

Fault 2: The boiler is losing pressure

If your Ferroli boiler is losing pressure, but you’ve checked there are no leaks coming from the radiators and no water discharging from the pressure relief valve, it’s usually a problem with the expansion vessel which will need to be repressurised.

Code

The Fix: An engineer will normally use a foot pump or hand pump to repressurise the vessel – it’s usually a quick fix, but with this brand you may require a replacement vessel first – as again, they are quite cheaply manufactured and and are prone to fail early in the boilers life

Fault 3: Heating behaving erratically

By ‘erratically’, I mean that your heating either isn’t coming on at the time you’ve set, or just coming on at random times that seem completely out of your control and make little sense (think 3am).

Ferroli boiler fh fault relief valve

The Fix: The cheap mechanical timers that were often installed in Ferroli boilers tend to be very flimsy and often break if someone tries to turn the timer back. It should be fairly simple to replace the programmer.

Fault 4: Boiler not firing/Going into lock-out

If your boiler is failing to fire up and just going into lock-out, it could be a problem with the PCB (printed circuit board), but you can check this by testing with a vault meter to see if electricity is reaching the PCB whilst still remaining unresponsive.

The Fix: Often, the only solution here is to have the PCB replaced, which can be costly.

Fault 5: Boiler igniting briefly or ‘puffing’

If your Ferroli boiler is only igniting briefly, or making a ‘puffing’ sound, this is usually down to flue problems, such as corrosion in the flue duct, or joints coming lose.

The Fix: Get an engineer to replace your flue or clamps holding the flue in place.

Consider a replacement

Especially if your Ferroli boiler is old, it may be worth considering a replacement boiler. Spare Ferroli parts tend to be very expensive, and the boilers themselves are unreliable and prone to multiple faults, so even if you fix whatever’s wrong now, you may find the boiler breaking down again in a couple of month’s time.

Upgrading to a new, A-rated boiler from a more reliable brand could save you a lot of money in the long-term, although you may see it as a bit of an investment in terms of upfront cost.

1. Frozen condensate pipe

The job of the condensate pipe is to transport acidic water, caused by waste gas, away from the boiler. This usually runs outside into a drain, because of its location it faces the risk of freezing.

If your condensate pipe has frozen, it will need to be thawed out. If you don’t feel comfortable doing this yourself, call out a registered engineer.

2. Low boiler pressure

Your boiler gauge should show that the boiler pressure is between 1.0 and 2.0. If the pressure drops below 1.0, then you’ll need to repressurise it. Follow our guide to low boiler pressure to resolve the issue.

3. A leak is coming from the bottom of the boiler

When you see water coming from the bottom of your boiler, the most common cause is a broken internal component, normally a pump seal or pressure valve. To determine the cause, it’s always best to get a Gas Safe registered engineer on the case.

If your Ferroli boiler is leaking, take a look through our guide Why is my Boiler Leaking? to help you find the cause.

4. Heating isn’t working properly

If you’ve set your heating to come on at specific times but it’s not, or the radiators seem to get hot a completely random times then it could be an issue with the mechanical timer. You should look to replace the programmer if this is the case.

5. Boiler locking out

Your boiler going into lock-out could mean that there’s an issue with the Printer Circuit Board (PCB). To find out if electricity is getting to the PCB, a vault metre will need to be used. In most cases, this issue means that the PCG needs to be replaced.

Which Ferroli Boiler Problems Need an Engineer?

Before trying to repair any faults on your boiler, it’s important to know whether you should leaving it to a Gas Safe registered engineer. We’ve put together the table below to help you with the most common problems your boiler might face.

ProblemPossible CauseDo you need an engineer?
No heat or hot waterCan be caused by several things including broken diaphragms and airlocks, failure of motorised valves, issues with the thermostat or low water levelsYes
Leaking and drippingMost likely to be a broken internal component but it will depend where the water is leaking fromYes
Banging, whistling or gurgling noisesAir in the system could be causing this, otherwise it could be that the water pressure is too lowYes
Pilot light goes outThe thermocouple could be broken which is in turn stopping the gas supplyYes
Losing pressureCould be a water leak in the system, the pressure relief valve needs replacing or due to recently bled radiatorsOnly if there’s a leak
Frozen condensate pipeThis fault should be displayed on your boiler with an error code or warning notificationYes
Thermostat issuesThermostat could be turned off or not set to the correct settingConsider purchasing a new thermostat
KettlingLimescale or sludge building up on the heat exchangerYes
Radiators not getting hotAir or sludge building up in the system or an unequal distribution of heatYour radiators will need to be bled which doesn’t require an engineer but if you don’t feel like carrying out the task yourself
Boiler keeps switching itself offCould mean low water pressure, a problem with the thermostat or a lack of water flow due to a closed valve, air or the pump not circulating the water in the system properlyYes
